Today it is one of Istanbul's most recognisable landmarks. Several centuries ago, however, an old Ottoman legend says that someone accomplished something almost impossible from this very spot.
In the 17th century, inventor Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi climbed to the top of Galata Tower, put on homemade wings and jumped.
🪽It is said that he flew across the Bosphorus and landed on Istanbul's Asian side, travelling several kilometres.
It sounds incredible, doesn't it?🤔
Historians still debate whether the flight really took place. The story reached us through a later source, so today it is generally regarded as a famous legend rather than a proven fact.
Galata Tower itself has stood for centuries, serving at different times as a watchtower, a fire lookout and a prison.
