Historical origin
The Grant Column is inspired by a set of six marble columns created in Granada, Spain, between 1350 and 1400 and now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. These columns originally belonged to the Alhamra, the famous royal palace-city ensemble in Granada, whose name means "red" after the red clay from which they were built. Narrow columns are a characteristic feature of the architectural style of the Nasrid dynasty (1232–1492) and probably adorned the open courtyards between the palaces. The Grant column, made of warm natural oak veneer, turns into a museum pedestal for displaying exhibits.
